I dont know if this is of any use to you. I did my own dna test on Ancestry, obviously there were matches there. I then uploaded my raw dna to Gedmatch.com  They have the test results from all the other dna testing companies, but only if the test holder has uploaded their dna sample to that site too.
I also uploaded my raw dna to the other free sites, FTDNA, my heritage, and dna land. All of these sites produce matches for you. Please be aware, Ancestry adds up their centimorgans one way, ftdna and my heritage another. So ftdna and my heritage will give a false closer match, ancestry is very accurate in saying what your relationship is. Gedmatch allows you to see what generation your shared common ancestor is, and has all sorts of chromosome browsers and things. Gedmatch seems to be the 'professional' genealogists choice of places to upload to and use to see if other people match you.
Good luck with it. :)

BIB - Can you substantiate that or is it just your person al opinion ?
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I have uploaded from FamilyTreeDNA to Gedmatch and the instructions when you upload your concatenated file from FtDNA to Gedmatch that you do NOT open it.  You leave it zipped.  I expect it is the same for uploads from Ancestry.

You dont open it Brigidmac. You leave it as a zip file. Then you go to gedmatch.com, open a free account and upload the unopened zip file. When you log into gedmatch if you look to the right on the top it says generic upload fast..click on that.

Thanks for answering. I do not think that supports your claim but each to their own. (And those three are not arbiters of DNA testing sites in any meaningful way in my opinion).

There is little doubt that GEDMATCH has the advanced tools (and a lot of them). So, if you are really into analyzing your matches in great depth, GEDMATCH is very advanced. If you are looking at the matching system, most seem to prefer either FTDNA or Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com has a tremendous connection to their huge database - but this database if full of errors as it is user submitted information. Also, you need an expensive subscription to get the vast majority of the functionality. The problems with Ancestry.com and 23andme, most people testing are not real serious genealogists - so you get a lot matches with people with no supporting genealogy or minimal interest in genealogy. FTDNA and GEDMATCH members have many fewer but more serious researchers. So it really depends on what your goals are.
