Ions family in Burnopfield
« on: Wednesday 12 July 17 00:18 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help with information on William Ions who is known to have been a beer retailer in the High Friarside area of the village of Burnopfield in 1894.  Although the two have grown into one another, I believe that High Friarside was a separate hamlet at the time.  Many thanks.

Where/when was he born? Married?
Have you found him on any census?

To brentor boy and Trish,

I started with absolutely no genealogical information other than what is in Whellans and my usual skill is investigating buildings.  He is a mystery man who has not left any personal history behind regarding his work.  Most of the pub landlords, innkeepers and beerhouse keepers have left traces - a little something for legend!  He appears to have left nothing even his establishment has gone.

High Friarside is a hamlet that has been absorbed into very much the larger village of Burnopfield but it is still more or less divided from the rest by the Parish Church and graveyard.  About 30 of the houses have been demolished but they were the primitive hovels inhabited by only the poorest.

So I am guessing that one of the remaining, larger, better houses was where he did business.  I am hoping that by tracking him, I can find out a little more about the precise location of his business.  The idea is to build up a commercial part of the village history.

Thank you for all your help.
