Alexander McClure WW2 Australian Imperial Forces
« on: Wednesday 12 July 17 07:17 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Starting to look for info for a friend on Alexander McClure born Scotland, but said to enlist in Second Aust.Imperial Forces 28/3/1940 Paddington NSW - Army number NX18209.  Waiting to hear back from friend re where he got this precise info, as doing a search on NAA I have found few Alexander McClures - and certainly not one with that number.

Mystery is that his wife died Scotland September 1939 - and only 6 months later he is said to have enlisted with Australian Army in New South Wales - but no further info known on him.  Though living in Australia, I have done very little Aussie research (mine all Scottish).   Any ideas anyone?
Have done brief NAA and TRove search - but nothing coming up easily.

slightly different spelling, but at the naa.gov.au online there's

MACCLURE ALEXANDER Service # NX18209 : born 28 Mar 1901, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, enlisted Paddington NSW.

ADD Oops, mirl has also located the above index entry, no red post, 20 seconds apart !  ;D

There are a few NSW deaths, so his parents' names would be useful.

I've always wondered what the X referred to. Two month's service for the case in question seems too short to have served overseas though?

Yes, I agree, two months is very short ... perhaps he became ill ...  I understood that there was training camps up around Singleton in the winter of 1940 where many men became ill and were sent to Sydney to a San/hospital near Lane Cove... but they were only N and not NX men,  ...
and  just as it seems difficult to get him from Scotland after death of his wife in Sept 1939 to enlist at Paddington NSW ...

Umm...  I will make phone call to an NX rellie, re 'are you sure everyone with X in WWII AIF is for their overseas service' ...
