I would like an opinion on whether you think these two signatures relate to the same person.William Barrett is my gg grandfather and I believe he married twice in 1842 and 1861.  thanks

They do look very similar  :)

I'd agree they look very similar.
Most letters are formed the same - especially the 'r's, which could easily have been formed differently.
Nearly 20 years between them, so they wouldn't be identical anyway.

Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

I don't.

The formation of the letters in William in the earlier one is quite rounded, whereas those in the later one are quite pointed.

Considering they're 20 years apart and no doubt with different pen nibs, I tend to think they were written by the same person

Thanks Aulus,I agree the 20 year time gap is an important consideration.I have looked at my own signature within a similar timeframe and "William's" signatures are much more consistent than my own.

I agree,  I would say they are written by the same person. Aulus makes valid points about the 20 years difference and the different pens.
