« on: Thursday 13 July 17 22:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am on the trail of Nathaniel Badger.  It appears he had a relationship with Susannah Til(l)cock, starting with the birth of Nathaniel Badger jnr in 1877 in Daventry.  He was baptised to Nathaniel and Susannah.

There is a marriage for Nathaniel Badger and Susannah Tilcock in 1902, Daventry district, Q Sept, Vol 3b, Pg 252.

I have found the following children, all baptised in Daventry:

I see in 1901 the family are split in two some of the children with Nathaniel Snr and some with Susannah, the family appears in the papers somewhat have you seen them?

Could this be Nathaniel Jnr?
1903 marriage to a Hannah Elizabeth Quinney in Rugby

There is a death in 1914 Daventry but his birth year is 3 years out but it could be him? He is also under Tilcock

For what it's worth, I don't think the 1881 family you refer to is your man.   Yes, I know he's got the same type of occupation and name but, aside from there being no marriage to an Esther, there doesn't seem to be birth registered for the children Esther and Jemima.   Birthplaces for all is shown as Daventry, but this Nathaniel a few years older.   Think this family is a red herring.

Personally, I think 'your' Nathaniel and Susannah were together in 1881 with their first 2 children and that they somehow eluded the enumerator on census night.  I note that their son Nathaniel was registered as Nathaniel Badger Tillcock but no sign of him under either surname.  Either the family eluded the enumerator for some reason or he somehow missed them.

I'm more concerned that Nathaniel Badger appears to have married an Ann Parsons or an Ann Watts Dec.1867 Daventry.   On 1871 census Nathaniel is with his mother Sarah but he is clearly shown as married and there is an Ann Badger bc.1847 Daventry who is a visitor in St. Sepulchre, Northampton who is shown as married so is this Nathaniel's wife?   Cannot see that they had any children (no births with mmn Watts or Parsons) so possibly the marriage had already broken down by 1871 hence them living separately.   Wonder what became of her.

I can see 16 children births registered in Daventry that look like your family, surname TILCOCK or TILLCOCK and no mmn between 1877 and 1900, and lastly Christina BADGER (mmn TILCOCK) in 1904. The baptisms you have tie in with these births with the addition of 2 unnamed males in 1885, Frederick William 1882, George 1894, Thomas 1898, and May in 1900.

Perhaps they didn't marry until Nathaniel was free if he had been married previously? Though I can't see any death for an Ann BADGER in Northampton around 1900-1902.

Hmmm. On the contrary..  ;)

I'd bet the 1881 family is your Nathaniel and Susannah - trying to cast red herrings, by telling almost a complete set of fibs, apart from the number of people in household and  the ages of the wife & children:

CENSUS 1881:  taken 4th April
8 Lutterworth Road, Daventry
RG11 / Piece 1559 / Folio 38/ Pg 30
Nathaniel BADGER 39, Shoe Rivetter
Esther 31
Esther 3
Jemima 1
All Born Daventry

Can't see births for Esther and Jemima in Daventry to match dates.
Can't see any marriage for Nathaniel to an Esther.
Can find no evidence of Esther or Esther jnr & Jemima post 1881.

While you're looking for: in 1881:
Nathaniel BADGER, abt 34
Susannah, abt 31 (based on her age in 1891)
Nathaniel, H Jnr 3 (born 1877)
Sarah Jane, 1 (b DecQ 1879) (d JunQ1881)

I'd agree that the reason Nathaniel and Susannah never married until 1902, is  likely because he was not free to legally do so? Or Susannah? Do you know about her pre 1877?

Cheers
