Ellen BLACKBURN Born 1851 Wolverhampton.
« on: Friday 14 July 17 04:30 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother Ellen Blackburn born Wolverhampton, Staffordshire c1851. Can't find her on 1861 census.  Ellen is shown on 1871 census as a servant in Wolverhampton, Clifton Terrace.

3 Nov 1872 Left England on the ship Warwick for Auckland New Zealand. Arrived 10 Feb 1873.
She came to New Zealand as an assisted immigrant ( Vogels Scheme. Had to pay back  £5-0-0 )  She was met in Auckland by Mrs. Fairburn. Not known if she was sponsored by her as no papers are available by NZ Archives.

Ellen married George Smith a carrier, 29 Dec 1874 in Otahuhu, Auckland,New Zealand.  2 children.

Ellen died 16 September 1923 in Auckland Hospital.  On her death certificate it says her mother was Sarah Blackburn . Father's not recorded but was a Maltster, by occupation. I have looked for a birth for Ellen born c1851 but cannot find one.

There is an Ellen born in 1854 in Wolverhampton but different parents. (I have this birth certificate) (1861 and 1871 census)This Ellen married in 1875 in Wolverhampton. My Ellen was in New Zealand then.

Any  help in finding birth or details of parents etc would be much appreciated.

Hmmm,

I wonder if this is the mother, Sarah BLACKBURN in 1851:

1851:  Horse Fair, Perks Court, Wolverhampton
HO107 / Piece 2019 / Folio: 118 / Pg41
Head: Charles BLACKBURN 40, Maltster & Gardener, b Stafford, Staffs
Wife: Mary BLACKBURN 40, b Baschurch, Salop
Dau: Sarah BLACKBURN 16, unm, House Sew, b Wolverhampton
Dau: Lucy BLACKBURN 8, Scholar, b Wolverhampton
Dau: Mary Ann BLACKBURN 7, Scholar, b Wolverhampton

Possible Birth: Sep Qtr 1845, Mary Ann BLACKBURN, mms WATKINS

Having trouble finding a Birth registration for Lucy?

Big gap between Sarah and Lucy. If Sarah herself was not born BLACKBURN, a child she may have had about 1851 might be under whatever her mother's maiden name is?

Cheers

Still working the BLACKBURN family of 1851....

Can't find  Charles Blackburn or wife Mary or daughter Sarah in 1861.

Can find daughter's Lucy and Mary Ann:

1861 CENSUS: Shiffnal, Shropshire
RG 9 / Piece  1854 / Folio 39 / Pg1
Servant: Lucy BLACKBURN, 17, b Wheaton Aston, Staffs

1861 CENSUS: at 11 Union Mill Street, Wolverhampton
RG 9 / Piece 1993/ Folio/ 100/ Pg 8
Servant: Mary Ann BLACKBURN 16, b Wolverhampton

1869 MARRIAGE:
Lucy BLACKBURN
Joseph SHELLY
June Qtr, 6b, 643 (not 613)
Married 4th April 1869, Wolverhampton

1870 DEATH:
Mary BLACKBURN age 58, registered Wolverhampton, Sep Qtr

1871 CENSUS: At 60 Honiton, 1 Court (a two headed abode. He's on his own, on his own schedule).
RG10 / Piece 2936 /Folio: 84 / pg33
Head: Charles BLACKBURN 60, Widr, Farm Labourer, b Stafford

In 1871, his married daughter Lucy SHELLEY, is with her husband and 1st child on Merridale Road in Wolverhampton. RG10 / Piece 2934 / Folio  54  Pg20

By 1881, he is living with them:

1881 CENSUS: At 53 Merridale Road, Wolverhampton
RG11 / Piece 2797 / Folio: 47 / Pg9
Head: Joseph SHELLEY 37, Jobbing Carter, b Frampton, Staffs
Wife: Lucy SHELLEY 37, b WheatenAston Staffs
Son: William C  11, b Wolverhampton
Dau: Mary E? 8, b Wolverhampton
Son: John ? 5?, b Wolverhampton
Son: Joseph 2, b Wolverhampton
Dau: Lucy age ?, b Wolverhampton
Father-in-Law: Charles BLACKBURN 70? Widw, Formerly Carter, b Penkridge, Staffs

1891 CENSUS: At Church Road, School Terrace,  Bradmore, Staffordshire
RG12 Piece 2225/ Folio 84/ Pg2
Head: Joseph SHELLEY 47, Cart Hauler, b Penn, Staffs
Wife: Lucy SHELLEY 47, b Wheaton Aston
Son: John 14, b Wolverhampton
Son: Joseph 12, b Wolverhampton
Dau: Lucy 10, b Wolverhampton
Son: George 7, b Wolverhampton
Wife's Father: Charles BLACKBURN 81, Widr, b STafford

Still can't pin down Lucy's birth registration.  It should be in Penkridge, if she was born Wheaton Aston.

I'm firmly suspicious, that the missing 1861 Census  for Charles & Mary, is where your Ellen will be with Sarah - and that Blackburn isn't the name she was birth registered under?

Looking for:
Mary's maiden name.
Her marriage to Charles.
Lucy's birth registration - she was baptized, 7 May 1843, Penkridge.

Cheers

Hi,

It looks as though Charles and Mary may have had another daughter who died as a baby,

Baptism
Charlotte BLACKBURN
St Peter's, Wolverhampton
10 Feb 1849
Parents:  Charles and Mary

Her death is registered,

Charlotte BLACKBURN    Jun Q 1850    Wolverhampton and Seisdon    17  279
Age at death:  1

I can't find a birth registration in the area that fits, so no help with her mother's maiden name.

Regards,
Daisy

Hi Garstonite

Thank you for the welcome.  Sorry I haven't replied. Have been away.
I assume that is Ellen on the 1871 census. That is the only one I can find too.
Had a look at the 1861 census putting in  Clifton Terrace , Wolverhampton and it shows 6 Clifton Terrace as a "Ladies School."  Also from No1 toabout  No 6 Clifton Terrace must have been the school. 6 Clifton Terrace was where Ellen was in the 1871 census. There were quite a few Scholars listed. there.
Don't know if Mrs Sherwin and Mrs Fairburn are connected at all. It is probable that as an "assisted immigrant" Ellen would have to be nominated I guess.  New Zealand Archives have no records that have survived regarding any nominations. Ellen came to Auckland and was a servant for George Smith, who was a carrier.  There must be some connection with Mrs Fairburn as Ellen and George Smith married at Mrs Fairburn's house in Otahuhu which is about 8 miles now from Auckland.   29 Dec 1874. It would have been a fair distance back then I guess. No tarsealerd roads! George got her pregnant while she was a servant for him. His wife died earlier that year in 1874.

AMBLY and Daisypetal.  Thanks for looking too .  Its a shame the 1861 census is not around.  Ellen was here in NZ in Feb 1873, having left UK 3 Nov 1872  I wonder if Blackburn was her real name??

Is there anywhere in England where records can be seen for "assisted immigrants" to New Zealand  under the  "Vogel Scheme." .  From website below.

"Jullus Vogel in 1870, Colonial Treasurer launched the most ambitious development prtoghramme in New Zealand's history.   He proposed to borrow huge sums from Britain to revitalise and accelerate European colonisation. The money would be used to assist British migrants to settle here, to speed up the purchase of Maori land, and to build the "public works" or infrastructure essential for economic development:railways, roads,  bridges, port facilities and telegraph lines."

The trip was for £13-0-0 for which Ellen hand to promise to pay £5-0-0. I presume she paid it back to the N.Z Govt.

Had a look at the marriage of Lucy Blackburn and Joseph Shelly, 4 April 1869 at the Parish Church, St Mark, Wolverhampton on FindMyPast and the witnesses were John Shelly and Ellen Blackburn!! So she was still there in 1869.  Wonder where the 1861 census got to.

Regards

Bill
