Person to person links in Ancestry trees
« on: Friday 14 July 17 07:38 BST (UK) »
Hi

In MyHeritage you can pick two people in someone's tree and it will show how they are linked.

Does Ancestry have this feature somewhere? I haven't found it yet.

Alternatively, how do people quickly find links from a person of interest to the home person in someone else's big ancestry tree?

Thanks

Ancestry will show how a person is linked to the "Home" person.
But only on your own trees.

Personally, I keep my trees both on Ancestry and on my PC in RootsMagic.
RootsMagic does have that feature; so it's what I use when I need to know.

Thank-you for that.

I am particularly interested in finding links between the home person and a person of interest in other people's trees in order to find how DNA matches link to me.

If the DNA match has a tree you can usually find them as or near the home person of the tree.

If you then see where you have a common place with your DNA match it would be good to quickly see if that linked place & person is a direct ancestor of the home person or not to see if they are worth investigating further.

It's easy enough when people have small trees but difficult to see in large trees.

Am I missing a trick to quickly find link?

Thanks

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and understand your position on DNA.

I do think it would be useful if Ancestry had a function to find out how 2 people on someone else's tree are linked whether DNA was involved or not. Or at least show their relationship to the home person. Perhaps I'm missing a trick in finding out how other people navigate trees that aren't their own.

Best wishes

I think that are far too many errors on Ancestry Trees for this to be a serious research tool?

I do occasionally look at other's trees, but I never, ever, use them as a basis for my own research.
And I don't think I have ever "navigated" another tree?

I have to agree with KG.  ::)

Like you I would like to know how some of 'my family' link easily to home people on Ancestry trees as a large proportion of those that I have looked at bear no relation to my family as they have just randomly 'picked them up' as they share the same surname.

You could create a new tree with the person of interest as the home person and merge it with the other tree.

That way you can then see the link to who you want

Obviously you'll have to delete the tree after that or people will sneer at you and call you names

Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Thanks Steve, Rosie and KGarrad.

I guess trying to find links with people that you share DNA with does change how you think of using Ancestry etc.

I am from the south of England born and bred but DNA tells me that I have about 100 cousins of various levels in the Southern parts of the USA. I have no idea how they got there or how we relate.

In theory, if they are 4th cousins we should share 3 x ggp's but I can't figure out who.

DNA is great if it proves that the paper trail you have produced is correct (which it has done a few times). But it's very frustrating when you can't find how you match.

Best wishes

Stephen
