Death of a Grimsby Man in Altona, Denmark?!
« on: Friday 14 July 17 15:09 BST (UK) »
I had a perfectly ordinary death in my database. Until the @BNArchive showed me this (attached)

Lincolnshire Chronicle - Friday 22 December 1843, Image © THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

So - can anyone tell me what happened in Altona?

EDIT; I don't have a known occupation for George, but his father Thomas was a Tailor. I don't know if George had any blue jeans. :-)

EDIT2; he was born 1817

Until 1864, Altona was under the administration of the Danish monarchy.
Today, it is westernmost urban borough (Bezirk) of the German city state of Hamburg, on the right bank of the Elbe river.

The First Schleswig War (1848–1851) may have had a bearing upon his death?

The railway from Altona to Kiel, the Hamburg-Altona–Kiel railway (Danish: Christian VIII Østersø Jernbane), was opened in 1844. Did he help to build that, perhaps?

The railway seems plausible. I'll keep digging.

Hi

I took a look if I could find anything in Denmark but nothing. I did find these though.
Might not be much but anyway:

There is a Sophia Kennington born Liverpool 5 Apr 1875 leaving Hamburg on the Bury on 9 Oct 1923 and arriving at Grimsby.
Then the same Sophia is arriving by plane to New York on 3 May 1960.
They are perhaps related.

Both records are on Ancestry.

aged 26 - so born 1817 - father Thomas
if this is him his middle name was Drant

Name     George Drant Kennington
 Gender     Male
 Christening Date     31 May 1817
Christening Date (Original)     31 MAY 1817
 Christening Place     GRIMSBY,LINCOLN,ENGLAND
 Father's Name    Thomas Kennington
 Mother's Name    Ann
do you know the occupation of George ??
my gg grandfather was a merchant seaman from Helogoland - an Island off Denmark that was BRITISH owned - and those sailors docked in Liverpool / Hamburg / Helogoland (Heligoland) frequently - he docked in Garston,Liverpool and married here - just wondered if it was possible he was a sailor and had an accident ?
looks like Thomas Kennington married Ann Thomlinson 12th January 1813 in Caenby - about 20 miles from Grimsby

It appears that "some" Danish newspaper's are online and searchable, but via
"gated" mechanisms.

Anyone have access (and speak Danish!) ?

Given George's middle name, I rather prefer this marriage to Ann Drant (info from FreeReg)
