Metcalfs Yard, Sunderland
« on: Friday 14 July 17 21:18 BST (UK) »
I have found family members, plus 30 others in a 1841 Census. The address is Metcalfs Yard, Sunderland. Near Plumbers Alley.
Also known as Monkeys Yard.
Has anyone any idea ref Metcalfs Yard, sounds like something to do with the Shipyards ?

Welcome to RootsChat
You can see Monkey's Yard on the 1860 map at http://www.durham-images.org/public/ms/m11/m11sc4.html
A possible origin of the name is a tradition that a monkey escaped from a ship and was pursued and captured in this yard. An old deed of 1874 refers to Monkey's Yard or Mtcalf's Yard. A Richard Mitcalf lived there in 1846 but this name was not in general use.

Quite a few articles on Monkey's Yard, Sunderland.

https://www.google.com/#q=Monkey's+Yard,+Sunderland

However the monkey executed was in British West Hartlepool.

Metcalfe & Co. had a Shipbuilding Yard in South Shields, but nothing to do with the Metcalfe's/Monkey's Yard in Sunderland.
