Thanks sancti. Just downloaded from sp James 1878 birth cert. No mention of middle name. Does this mean he didn't have one or it was omitted?

No sign of a middle name in census records.

Maybe there were other James McHolms in South Africa and he needed a middle name for the records to avoid a mix up

No nothing on 1881 or 1891 census. Think my only way of finding out is to get the death record of JC McHolm 1944 from SA. I have heard this could be difficult. Do you know what information would be on it? A birth date perhaps?
