Another thought, they might not have been married. Eliza was Georges and Charlottes and registered as Jepson, as was Thomas, but registered as Merritt because it was still Charlottes surname!

I think they are right. The children were all baptised in 1878 it seems. Thomas Merritt/Jepson being one of them
