A puzzling Newspaper Ad
« on: Saturday 15 July 17 19:54 BST (UK) »
I know what a Joist is and I have googled this short advert from the Lancaster Gazette until I am blue in the face but still have no idea what it means. It appeared once in the newspaper, the name and address belong to a small farm I have been researching, but I am still no nearer understanding what it means   ??? ???
It reads:
                                                   JOIST
Taken in at Bondgate and Starbank
                              Apply to Richard Jenkinson, Ellel
Hoey, McLuskey - Scotland & Ireland. Eckersley, Rogerson - Lancashire. McGee - Ireland, Lancashire. Barnes - Bolton, Lancs

Could it be that someone lost a joist and it was found (taken in)  at Bondgate and Starbank - a sort of Lost and Found type of ad.

Possibly farmers shorthand for a stray animal possibly a steer, newspaper ads charged by the word, so a full description would be more expensive.

Isn't there a category heading for the advert, eg. Lost and Found, to give a clue to its meaning?

I'm sure it must mean agist, either a typo or a local variation.

agist

/ˈeɪdʒɪst/  verb

verb: agist; 3rd person present: agists; past tense: agisted; past participle: agisted; gerund or present participle: agisting

take in and feed (livestock) for payment.
"the dairy farmer might wish to agist lambs after the cows are housed for the winter"

Our local paper has regular adverts for agistment in the farming section.

Ellel has a place in Roman history, thus there must be one or two main through roads in the vicinity.  I see there were cotton and silk weaving mills in the area which usually meant owners built new mansions or extended existing ones.  Thus I think a wooden joist was jolted off a passing cart stacked high with other building material and the driver didn't realise - OR some thieves made off with the joist, were seen, dropped their booty and ran off.

Nothing to do with wooden joists - it means taking in of livestock. See here:
