Carl A. Nilsson and Ida V. Andersson
« on: Sunday 16 July 17 15:23 BST (UK) »
Thank you so much! I will take you up on your offer.  I will send you the names and dates of a few people that have stumped me. I do have a general question… What was life like on these farms in the 1700s and 1800s? I have done some research online, so I have a little idea. I think about the very long days of summer you have, but also the very short days in winter. Did they work through the winter? I assume they had livestock and animals, but in terms of planting, that must have been a short season.  I know there were some years with bad crops, so that must have been very hard on people.

My relatives moved to Connecticut between 1890 and 1906. They were tradesmen and work mostly in construction. In fact, my great grandfather built many houses in Bridgeport Connecticut that still stand today. They were very involved in the Swedish Baptist church in the United States. I believe one of the reasons they moved, besides economic opportunity, had to do with religious freedom of expression.

We are all spread out across the United States now, but most of us live in Florida and have for decades.

Thanks again so much for all your help! I will send you a couple of requests shortly.

Paul

I will send this one in 2 parts.  The 1906 marriage record of Carl A. Nilsson and Ida V. Andersson.  I can't find Carl listed in Tornevalla or Normlosa between 1900 and 1906.  If you can, that would be great.  I want to know if he and Ida lived near each other or on the same farm prior to getting married.  They left for the US a month after they married.

I take it that you have Ida's last household page:

Normlösa AIIa:1 (1898-1909) Bild 118 / sid 108 (AID: v177591.b118.s108, NAD: SE/VALA/00261)

She travelled with her father.

Added - Maybe not together but at the same time anyway: Ship leaving Gothenburg on 11 July 1906.

I noticed that the 2 parishes are quite a distance apart. So, how they met is anyones guess, perhaps at a market or a dance, but they didn't work or live near each other.

Here is the same marriage record but from Törnevalla too:
Törnevalla C:9 (1895-1930) Bild 156 / sid 17 (AID: v179666.b156.s17, NAD: SE/VALA/00395)

Thanks!  I had found a couple of those bits of information (where they last lived and when they left for Copenhagen and finally New York) on my own yesterday, but since I didn't see this thread, I didn't know you had found out even more. Thanks for providing all of the references.

One question: did they marry at the Törnevalla church or in Normlösa?  I did find both marriage records and it looked like the marriage might have happened at the Törnevalla kyrka.

When they arrived in New York, they were detained for three days and finally were admitted into the US on July 28, 1906.

I will have a few more requests coming soon. Thanks again for all of your help!
