Dorothy May Phillips and George William Phillips
« on: Sunday 16 July 17 21:43 BST (UK) »
My grandparents.were Dorothy May Phillips (nee Herring) and George William Phillips they both died in 1992 I believe that they were both aged 88. They lived in Hurst near twyford Berkshire I believe that he applied for a birth certificate and found that his names were reversed that he was called William George Phillips.i don't know where either were born but believe he may have been born in, Reading Berkshire.
My relatives have said that someone tried to trace our family tree but couldn't see past my grandfather's birth certificate which sounds strange.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Alistair

They married in March quarter 1926 Wokingham district.

A copy of their marriage certificate should give their fathers names/occupations to trace further back.
Witness names can also be helpful if they were family members.

Hi Alistair,

Have found Dorothy's death in 1992, however not George's in 1992.

Could this be his death registered as William George and George William? -

Birth Date - 23 May 1903
Date of Registration - Sep 1989
Age at Death - 86
Registration district - Reading and Wokingham

George William Phillips

Age at Death - 86
Registration district - Reading and Wokingham

I would just like to add that another source gives George William(William George) birthdate as 23/5/1904 which is something to keep in mind.

He certainly wasn't born in Reading area which doesn't help with a common surname and too many possibilities in other places.

Definitely need, as has been suggested already, details of his marriage certificate to find out name of his father.

I would just like to add that another source gives George William(William George) birthdate as 23/5/1904 which is something to keep in mind.

One possibility might be
June 1904 Greenwich 1d 1956
Phillips, William George
mother -

Possible baptism at Hatcham Park All Saints, 15 July 1904
abode 10 Mason's Place
father a Labourer
But no parent named!
Says 7 weeks old (which means he could have been born 23 May)

Electoral registers from the late twenties on have George William + Dorothy May Phillips at Chain Cottages, Hurst.
Curiously, the free index to 1911 has a possibility in Hurst, a nurse child
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kep/

School records from Hurst have a George Phillips (Simpson has been crossed out). Father Wm of Tape Lane. (Perhaps Wm would be Simpson?) Admitted in 1908 to St Nicholas Church of England Primary School, went to the Boys School in 1912.
But the d-o-b given is 6.7.04, not a match!

I don't know whether transcriptions of the 1939 Register are allowed, so won't do that.   However, George W birth year shown as 1904, Dorothy 1906.   5 children shown - 4 of whom must now be deceased as their details are open.
