Very informative Obit for Donald Beaton:
CURRENT TOPICS. (1902, March 3). Examiner (Launceston, Tas. : 1900 - 1954), p. 5 (DAILY.). Retrieved July 17, 2017, from
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article35477327Obituary.-The death of Mr. Donald Beaton occurred at his daughter's residence, Romilly-street, Westport, on February 8. Mr. Beaton (states the "Westport News") was in his usual health, on that day, and attended the auction sale at Mr. Munro's store. About 7 in the evening, shortly after arriving home, he was seized with an apoplectic stroke, never regaining consciousness, and died shortly after 11 o'clock. Dr. Mackenzie was in attendance, and was unremitting in his attentions to the sufferer, but he never rallied. Mr. Beaton was a native of Dingwall, Scotland, and, with Mrs. Beaton, arrived in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1843, where he entered into business as a merchant, and was one of its most enterprising residents. While there he commenced shipbuilding, and built the schooner Annie Beaton, brig Janet Stewart, and other vessels. He left Tasmania for New Zealand where he arrived at Hokitika in 1867, shortly afterwards leaving for Westport, where he commenced business on the North Beach, near what is called Mormontown. He afterwards opened a store on the Northern Terraces, subsequently at Mokihinui, and finally at Waimangaroa. where he has resided for the last 20 years. About three months ago, finding his health failing, and at the urgent request of his daughter and son-in-law, he came to Westport, and has resided with them till his death. Mr. Beaton was a hearty, upright, staunch Scotchman, of the self-reliant class. His generous and kindly disposition made him a favourite with everybody, and it may confidently be said that he never had an enemy. Mrs. Beaton, who was equally well-known and respected, pre-deceased her husband some 16 years. She was the mother of three chlildren, two of whom died in childbhood, leaving Mrs. J. Marshall the sole survivor.
