Welcome to Rootschat  :)

You haven't given us any idea of dates- 'Both born in the 1800's' is rather vague. Civil registration of births started in 1864 so if one or either born before that date you need to check for birth certificate. Any idea when either or both were born?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Mattie and welcome  :)

Is this your family living in Oldham?

1901 3805/9/10

Thomas Leonard 42 yrs
Margaret Leonard 41 yrs
Plus several children and
Austin Leonard 68 yrs

Parents and Austin born Ireland - 1911 indexes indicate Moylough for Thomas.

How far back have you searched?

Heywood

PS it would be better to have a separate thread. I will contact a moderator to ask re this.

1891 3307/17/27

Shows Thomas born Sligo, Margaret born Mayo and there is a brother Matthew Leonard born Sligo.

Ages in census do vary so that is something to consider but the brother might be helpful in tracing the correct family.

Thomas Leonard was born in 1861 Moylough, Galway, Ireland and his wife was Margaret. His father was Austin also born in Ireland in 1833 and married Catherine and where both the parents of Thomas.

One of Thomas' sons James Leonard born in Oldham Lancashire in 1890 and was married to Jane Hannah Robertshaw is who I descended from.

Sorry guys for the vauge dates early didn't have my notebook with the details on me at the time

Hello again,

Do you have Thomas's baptism in Galway?
Do you have any details about Catherine - Thomas' mother?

Austin Leonard b 1833 was born in Sligo according to the 1911 Census.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Achonry_East/Moylough/771073/
He was with his daughter Bridget.
In England in the 1901.
I also searched, Austin and wife Catherine, she was Catherine Hunt.
Children, Patrick, Matthew Catherine and Attracta. These are the names listed.
This is in the registers site "Archonry and Curry" 1868 for Attracta.

Mattie The BOB (Click the house, under my avatar) has " Leonard " as a Gypsy surname in 1881, Lancashire. Just that one entry then. But, he got it from somewhere.

But, then, ye mention SHAW?! Look!
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

So I've been doing more digging and the Siglo county connection is correct with Austin.

I have found out more information on Thomas Leonard.

His wife's name was Margaret Basset she was born in 1861 and married Thomas in Inch Cork but other sources say Inch, Down. So I'm pushing more that they married in Down.

Margaret's parents where Edward Basset born in Downpatrick, Down in 1826 and her mother was Anne Jane Leonard (again another Leonard but from his wife's family) she was born in Moneymore, Londonderry in 1820
