Willie Wrigley of Todmorden
« on: Monday 17 July 17 15:12 BST (UK) »
On my Calderdale Companion, I have an entry for Willie Wrigley [b 1874] an architect of Todmorden at

www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/w.html#w955

who was sent to prison, and I ask whether anyone knows why he was incarcerated

Someone has followed this up, and found a prison record (on A******y) which records the sentence (possibly along with a William Lord, a mason, also of Todmorden), but the sentence for both men is unclear  - could it be a form of Ditto?

If anyone can find the record again ... and can decipher the sentence ... I should be most grateful

Thanks in advance

Not sure what the offence was, but it's not "ditto"
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

An earlier entry, and a little bit clearer  :-\

Not sure (this was 1913 I think) but some context on Willie is provided by this earlier report:

Burnley Express, 5 June 1907

The maximum sentence of three months' hard labour was passed at Todmorden yesterday on Willie Wrigley, architect, of Hebden Bridge, charged with neglecting his wife and children.  It was stated that prisoner had formerly a splendid business at Hebden Bridge.  A fortune was left him, and he quickly got through it.  He had been cohabiting since with another woman at Southport, where he was arrested.  His own family had cost the rates £41.

Earlier reports show that the charges had been before the magistrates' court at Todmorden as early as December 1905 (but adjourned at that time to give him another chance).  He had gone through £900 in very little time by drinking.  He had run away, and written threatening letters to his wife.

In light of the above I wonder whether the 1913 proceedings were for being drunk & disorderly?

ancestry has transcribed the sentence as 'imprisonment or servitude'

in July 1901 he had an ejectment order placed on him as the tenant of a house in Garnett Street Hebden Bridge

The 1901 census gives the family living in Garnett St but Willie's name and details although submitted have been heavily crossed out
