My great grandmother Alice (Christinas daughter) is in the workhouse.  She was born in 1877 but there is no birth certificate for her.  I have checked this with the records office.  Her father (should have read Alfred Edward - sorry) appears on Alices marriage certificate as Edward Montrose.  Nothing comes up for a birth, death or marriage for him.

From Family Search - where did you get Alfred Edward from?  just Alfred on baptism and just Edward on marriage cert

Alice Montrose

Birth Date    19 Jul 1877
Father's Name    Alfred Montrose
Mother's Name    Christina

In 1911 Christina's birthyear is 1873 so she did well to have a child at 4yrs of age ;D

Christina died Kensington 1923 aged 68 so back to 1855 as her birthyear.  Who reported her death?

Alfred Edward came from Alice although there was little contact between Alice and Christina.  We dont know if Alice had any contact with him.  There is a record of an Alfred Montrose in prison in London about 1879 - whether its him or not we dont know.  It was Charles Latham Smith that registered the death but we dont know if he was there when she passed away or where Alfred was.  There is no maiden name on the death certificate.

Having now got all the information I can understand your problem.  Unless somebody else has her in their tree I don't know how it can be solved.  The absence of a marriage to Montrose denies us the opportunity of finding anything else about her.

I doubt she and Montrose stayed together as she seems to have been in service until her death.

A real poser ???

Thank you for looking Carole.  It is a bit of a brain teaser.  We think Alfred and Christina did go their separate ways - when, why - we have no idea.  Christina did try and build bridges with Alice but it wasnt very successful.  The family wasnt allowed to talk about her.  Will keep trying to solve it. I dont like giving up  :)
