This doesn't help with the search other than to confirm he had brothers ...

But here are some touching memoriam notices for Hugh McDonald who was accidentally killed in Dundee.

1918 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article119750032 (from wife and children)

1919 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4708330  (one from wife and children, one from father-in-law and mother-in-law and one from brothers and sister-in-law)

1920 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4591684  (wife and children)

1921 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4679338 (wife and children)

May I ask Cramond Brig if you are a descendant or if are you perhaps filling out some local Dundee history?

Ros

Hi Ros,

Yes, we saw these, and Hugh seems to have been well thought of and loved.

I am a trustee of Scotland's War (1914-1919), a charity registered in Scotland. You will find our website at www.scotlandswar.co.uk and it will be clear from a visit what we are trying to achieve. The work goes on!

The VIC site is down. Looks like they are modernising it.

Interesting to note that there is nothing in the papers from his parents, or sisters.

Were they deceased by that time? The death notice for Neil mentions father George, but not mother.

Thank you so much. I'm afraid I feel that the demon drink must have been the culprit here. Even Hugh's wife could not work out why he was in Dundee.

At least he enjoyed some Dundee hospitality on his last night ...  :)

He did express a wish to travel to Dundee quite early (relatively  ;) ) in the evening of drinking.  Oh well we may never know why ...   And I do feel for his wife having to ask the army why/how her husband was in Dundee when he received a fractured skull and was he there on leave?  And they apparently sent her the witness statements of his night of bingeing.

So very sad for all concerned.

Possibly Hugh's parents' deaths according to the bride and groom's parents' names on the cert.

McDONALD Angus
Father Donald  Mother Margaret MATHIESON
At Cressy    1920 72 years  Reg#14103

McDONALD Jessle
Father Donald  Mother Ann McGUINESS
At Colac  1885    42 years  Reg#11562

A digitised probate file is on PROV for this Angus who appears to have married a Priscilla in 1900.

Very sad, indeed. You would think he must have had something in mind to make him travel to Scotland - and that must have been something to do with his mother and/or father. One soldier of the A.I.F. and one soldier of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who were on leave in the district at the time attended and assisted at the funeral. An oak cross was erected by the A.I.F. and later a CWGC Gravestone. He is buried beside two other Australian soldiers.
