My strongest inclination is to think that the researcher who linked Mary Ann Brown/Watkins to John Brown of Frome (son of William and Mary), was wrong. I suspect that the 1851 census that names John Brown is actually the record for Samuel John Brown and Sophia Bond. I believe Samuel John Brown may have been the son of another Samuel, so might well have been called John within the family.

Once the sequence of census years is put in a spreadsheet the name matches and ages are too good to be anything else.

I have information that John Brown (Samuel!!) died in 1869. The John who married Winifred seems to be another John Brown who moved to Trevethin froom Somerset.

There's a lot of good stuff in the replies, thanks, I'll go through it all again to verify my thoughts.
I'll also continue my search for John Brown, why couldn't he have been called something unusual!!!
Pembrokeshire - Brown, Rees, Thomas, James, Nedahl, Noot
Somerset - Brown, Parfitt, Daniell, Wheeler, Clissold, Indoe
Wiltshire - Collins

Ignore my comments about John & Winifred, that needs further research. The handritten notes I was working from can be interpreted to show Sophia died in 1869 (as identified by rosie99, so if Samuel went back to being John this 1877 marriage needs examination. I'll leave that to other researchers who are more closely related.

When Samuel/John Brown remarried Winifred following the death of Sophia he states his father was James Brown
