Ellenmai,

Thank you so much. I am glad he wasn't hanged. It must have been horrendous, though - losing your father, spending some time in prison and then sent out to the other side of the world to do hard labour and only 16.

I do hope he managed to get some sort of decent life later and that he has loads of happy descendants who are interested in their family tree  ;D

In 1835 a special settlement was established in Van Deman's Land at Point Puer to house and rehabilitate the growing number of young male convicts who were being transported to the colony. Lets hope Charles was one of them ;)

Oh dear, not the easiest read in more sense than one. Seems he enjoyed the odd visit to the pub - and who can blame him - but then there was a spot of embezzlement  :( So probably not a happy ending.

Ellenmai,

I do hope so but if he was he still seems to have been getting into bother! Dec 31st 1841 he got 12 months hard labour for embezzlement. He would have been 23 by then. Don't know what happens after that.

That's indeed a rosy view of Point Puer  ::) ::)  ::)
It was a reformatory, apparently the first prison just for boys.  When I was at school we were told it was for the 'hard to handle' boys particularly, but that may not be the case.  One website says it was renowned for its harsh discipline.
