Selina Oakes
« on: Thursday 20 July 17 15:57 BST (UK) »
For years I've had the wrong details for Selina Oakes.
I thought she was born in 1841 in Wilmslow to Thomas Oakes (a wealthy farmer and landowner in Allostock,Cheshire) and Frances Ryecroft.
Selina married Joseph Vernon from Antrobus in Manchester on the 1st October 1865, it states her father was a watchman.
Selina died in 1923.
There are other records for a Selina Oakes marrying Peter Leigh Ledward in Peover in February 1865, who died in Plumley in 1879.
There is a birth index record for Selina Oakes in Altrincham for 1844.
On the census for 1871 Selina is living in Openshaw with William Vernon and it states she was born in Liverpool, then all the subsequent census's upto 1911 say she was born in Wilmslow.
The other Selina was living in Plumley in 1871 with Peter Ledward stating she was born in Allostock.
So now I'm pretty certain my Selina Vernon (Oakes) wasn't from Allostock.
But I can't find any records previous to 1865 for Selina Oakes other than the birth in Altrincham in 1844 which could be the other Selina.
There are census records for Selina Oakes living in Allostock previous to 1865.
Can anybody help me find records for Selina please and confirm that I'm right to surmise I've made an error in my earlier research.
Many thanks
Richard

So to clarify "your" Selina is the one that married William Vernon with father Thomas Oakes a watchman.

That Selina is 25 as at 1 October 1865 so born c1840 and it's her we need to locate before 1865?

Both birth registrations seem to be 1844 - the one with MMN Rycroft is under Oaks.

The one with MMN Roberts is the Altrincham birth.

Selina died in 1823.

1923 aged 84, I think.

Selina married William Vernon from Antrobus in Manchester on the 1st October 1865, it states her father was a watchman.

Husband was Joseph Vernon rather than William (which was his father's name).

Yes Millipede, its the one who married Vernon (I put William but it was Joseph)...
I've modified the original post now, thank you.

Ahh, so there could be a death record for Selina's mum between 41 and 68 somewhere then? Whatever her first name was?  ???

There's a damaged 1851 census page for Gorton Brook, Lancs which may be relevant to the Thomas Oakes found by jonw65.

I've found an 1871 census in findmypast for a Thomas Oakes born 1818 in (I think) Audlem Cheshire, he is a coachman?? living in Ardwick, Manchester
His wife is Ann born 1826? in Northwich.
There's a Sarah A Oakes born 1857 born Manchester
and John Oakes born 1860 scholar born Manchester
Is it a possible??

He might be a possible. It's confusing!
The big problem in all this is where is there a Selina born about 1840?
Have you seen this old thread on here started by Blackburn Fossil? (Maybe they will see this)
