It was actually unlawful at the time for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister (until the law was changed in 1907) though in practice it was not uncommon.

Perhaps, however, this was why Joseph and Selina married in the relative anonymity of Manchester Cathedral, rather than more locally where they would be known to the minister.

Watching very closely - my surname is Oakes - I go back to 1685  Cheshire - St Chads in Over  - Middlewich / Backford /Neston /Little Neston / all Cheshire and then Liverpool since 1871 -

Just received the birth certificate for Selina Oakes born in Styall 26/06/1844. Her father Thomas a labourer, but her mother Ann Roberts, not Jane...
The place of birth fits in with Thomas being from Styall, but not her mothers first name???
