Have you seen this old thread on here started by Blackburn Fossil? (Maybe they will see this)

Ah yes, the family headed by Thomas OAKS (watchman) with wife Jane in 1861 looks promising.  They are on a page which includes Gorton Brook addresses, so look like a match with the damaged 1851 entry I mentioned earlier.

Thomas is 43 rather than 63 in 1861, as I read it.

Presumably Ellen in 1851 is Helena in 1861.  Elizabeth is consistent between both.

Haha no way Jon,
I was in touch with Ken years ago, he is my mums cousin's, son I think?
I only found out this link through Genes Reunited which was where I originally went wrong with the Selina Oakes ancestors. Not his fault, but there were a few with the same ancestors so I foolishly went along with it. He might've even copied me then realised it was wrong.
I will try and find out if I still have the correspondence with him, but obviously he stumbled across the mistake before me.
I wonder if he took it off the back burner?
I know the area quite well as I live in Knutsford, so Morley could be Morley Green which is close to Ringway, Wilmslow and Styall, so that could be the same Thomas.
I understand why she say's she was born in Liverpool in the 1871 census if her sister Elizabeth was born in Liverpool. But not sure where Stean Green in Warrington is?
I think that could be the family though?
What do you think?

Yes, I agree with avm228 that it looks promising. Thomas Oak has the right occupation and was also living in John Street, as per Selina's marriage, albeit a few years later. And I agree that it ties in with the 1851 entry she found.
If your lady is that Ellen/Helena, then from the marriage to Joseph Vernon onwards, she always seems to appear as Selina. Unexpected!
John

Yes, it looks that way, thank you for the help.
Also if you notice on the 1871 census her name is spelt Selena, maybe it was a gradual name change, lol... but why?

Didn't the West Derby registration district cover quite a large area in those days? so it didn't necessary mean they had to have moved all that way over to Liverpool?

Goodness.

Elizabeth Ann Oakes and Joseph Vernon are on the same page of marriages, Dec qtr 1864 Chorlton.

If they married one another, is this the same Joseph Vernon who went on to marry Selina Oakes in 1865? (Her bridegroom was a widower.)

Added: LancashireBMD confirms Elizabeth and Joseph did marry one another, at St Barnabas, Openshaw.
