There was a pub, called The Angel, which closed in the 1860s.
Could Angel Yard be connected with that pub?

It was situated in what is now 88 Bailgate.

Looking at the Bailgate pictures, the Archaeologist in me says that at the very least these buildings are built on the same building lines as the medieval buildings that they replaced. I would suggest that it is well worth visiting or contacting the local museum to see what if anything remains of the former buildings. It is not infrequent for the medieval buildings to remain behind the new facade virtually intact. This was apparent several times in Time Team if you can find the episodes concerned, one involved a survey in York.
