19th century South African Marriage Licences
« on: Friday 21 July 17 15:55 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage entry for 31 May 1855 in Pietermaritzburg - the Wesleyan Chapel.  Both parties are widowed, the bride being the sister of the groom's first wife :o

The marriage is by Licence.  What would be the chance of finding the information related to this Licence?  I know that in England the Licence is handed to the minister, but that there is a possibility that the Bond and/or Allegation has survived.  Would that be the case in South Africa?

Just being nosy, really  8)

Here's the snip from the marriage entry, which, hopefully will help.

James was originally a Missionary, born in England, and he went to SA in 1820 with his new wife.  He eventually resigned as a Missionary, but had connections with the Chapel in PMB.  After his wife, Elizabeth, died in 1854 James subsequently married her sister, Sarah Ann.
