George PASHBEE c1809-1850
« on: Friday 21 July 17 21:57 BST (UK) »
I have the following extract from New Zealand Cemetery Records 1800 - 2007
Name: George PASHBEE
Birth date: abt 1809
Death age: 41
Date death: 3  Feb 1850
Burial place : Wellington, New Zealand
Cemetery: Wgtn. - Bolton Street.

It is possible that he was an English sailor in whom I have an interest  and I had hoped that his death certificate would provide additional identifying details but I cannot find him on the BDM index.

I would welcome any help in identifying him further.

Hello...

It does seem as though he was a sailor...

Inscription on Tombstone
Sacred to the memory of George PASHBEE, late Caulker on board HMSV "Acheron",who died 3 February 1850, aged 41. This stone is erected by the Officers & Crew of HMSV "Acheron" as a mark of respect to his memory.

Would be interesting to see if there is any mention of him in the following logbook...

"Acheron" (ship) - Official Logbook

You'll find mentions of the ship on Papers Past. I can't see anything re: the death though.

One report says that it was to leave England November 1847:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZ18480412.2.3?query=HMS%20Acheron

If he was British and on a British ship, would his death have been recorded in the UK?

FindMyPast has a marriage in 1835 for George Gardner Pashbee to Jane Bastion in Falmouth Cornwall,
The date was 17 Sep 1835.
There is also a birth for this man in 1810,he was baptized 11 Feb 1810 son of Sarah and Samuel Pashbee.
This fits the age of the chap buried in NZ

Cheers Janette

FindMyPast also has British Royal Navy Allotment Declarations 1795-1852
The 1832 entry has George Pashbee, ordinary seaman on the San Josef pay book number SB 67 and the allotment is to be paid to Sarah Pashbee his mother, there are a few like this and then the 1835 one tranfers the allotment from his mother Sarah to his wife Jane and it says they married in the Falmouth church 17th September 1835,the address of Jane was given as High Street Falmouth, the allotment was payable on the 1st Oct at the Customhouse. This looks to be the George Gardner Pashbee mentioned in the birth and marriage above,

Cheers Janette
