In addition to the above, there is this birth

Nottingham September 1857 7b 239

Mary Jane Traynor

I wondered if she was connected because of Nottingham and the name - James' mother is Mary Jane.
Although that entry is in Free BMD, I can't see her in GRO index for mmn.

William's military record is online.  Also states born Nottingham c 1852.

Not sure it adds anything, but this is his marriage:

Annie Gilcriss - 20, Spinster, Fulwood
Groom's Father: James Trainer, Labourer
Bride's Father: Edward Gilcriss, Farmer
Witness: J. Hickey; J. J. Shaw
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

I was studying this yesterday - no James or William  and quite complicated.

1871 2085/36/64 Torquay

Mary Jane Traynor 14 yrs b Nottingham with parents James and Caroline.
Very dodgy transcription of names for Caroline and siblings.
The younger children have mmn Preston.

Some names are similar to those of William's children.
James is something to do with birds I think.
In 1861 -3 children are in Staffordshire as nurse children - Mary Ann b Lichfield, Francis b Lichfield and a John, I think, and if I recall the parents are elsewhere.
Looking at newspaper snippets James snr may have been in bother at times and he seems to deal in clothes and birds as I said  :-\

I am not sure if this is the family at all. James snr usually shows born Exeter.
I just wonder....

William Robert appears to have joined up at Curragh in Ireland in 1870. I wonder if the father was in the army and they travelled about, perhaps not in uk census as children. There is a tree on Ancestry which gives the name Francis James for William's father ( no further details) and no mother details. William Robert died in Western Australia in 1942. Tree says he was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

That seems a much better explanation than mine Isobel.

Thanks for that Jomot.

Preston fits with the other family I was looking at - James and Caroline and of course she is with them.

Looking at William's record, I read it that he joined and attested at Kingston upon Hull in August 1870 (page 3) then joined at Curragh Camp in September 1870.(page 1). Could that be right?
