Jonathan SIMPSON and family, Foulness, Essex (COMPLETE)
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 00:42 BST (UK) »
I have a Jonathan (1) SIMSON and Rebecca MARSHALL, married in St Mary the Virgin, Foulness, in 1814.

With following children all born in Foulness: Rebecca (1814, before parents marriage), Thirza and Mahala (twins 1816), Elijah Sergeant (1824)

and my GG Grandfather, Jonathan (2) SIMPSON born in 1818.

I'm trying to find record of Jonathan (1) SIMSON's birth.

**********

The only record I can find is a John SIMSON born 1800, to Jonathan and Sarah SIMSON, in the same parish in Foulness. If this is him, it's the only time he's called JOHN instead of JONATHAN.

The trouble I have with this 1800 birth is that he would have only been 14 when he married Rebecca. The marriage record shows no info about age, or him needing parental consent etc for being underage.  They did have a child out of wedlock (2 mos before marriage) which would suggest he fathered this child when he was closer to 13.  Anyone know if this is at all likely?

I've searched most of the records on SEAX in neighbouring parishes but can't find any other Jonathan SIMSON-SIMPSON birth 1790-1800.

The 1841 census in ROCHFORD has:

Jonathan SIMSON age 45 and Jonathan SIMSON age 20. Next door is Sarah SIMSON age 65. This could possibly be my #1 and #2 Jonathan and their mom next door.  If my Jonathan was born in 1800, he'd be 41 so I think that's still in keeping with the rounding up/down of census ages.

I don't know what to think about this one.

Other related info:

Re: his wife Rebecca MARSHALL

I've found no record of her birth in Foulness but I did find one in Greenwich in 1795 that could match.  Not sure why/how she got to Foulness to marry though.

There is a death record for a Rebecca SIMPSON in ROCHFORD, in 1837, age 73 (sorry typo), suggesting she was born about 1796. At least one of their kids was also buried in ROCHFORD.

I have not found a matching death record for Jonathan SIMSON (1) yet but I do have a record of a Jonathan SIMSON who died in Rockford in 1836, age 73.  Could be SIMSON (1)'s father.

I would be interested in your thoughts on this stumbling block.  Thanks.

Little Stambridge Essex (St Mary)
Jonathan Simpson married Sarah Abrams 15 June 1794
they had a son Jonathan baptized 25 January 1795 also at Little Stambridge.

This village is not far from Foulness.

My initial thoughts are that they are not one and the same.
The Foulness records for other baptisms mention the child's age if inot a very young infant, the marriage of 1814 calls him a bachelor and not a minor, banns were read so a licence was not required and a father's permission was not mentioned. The same vicar performed both the baptism and marriage so possinly knew the family.
I would think finding his death is the best way to solve this.

If he was born 1795 Jonathan he would have been 21 in 1814.

The daughters of Jonathan and Rebecca,  Thirza and Mahala both married 1837 in the Rochford registration district

ADDED
Rebecca who died Rochford age 73 n 1837 would have been born 1764, much too old.

Rochford Burials/ St Andrews Church
Rebecca Simpson age 20 buried 31 August 1834.
If this is their daughter born 1814 Foulness, then they moved to Rochford after 1824 and before 1834

ADDED
Rebecca Simpson age 41 buried 1 January 1837 at St Andrews Rochford.

This could be his wife born circa 1796.

Should have mentioned Thirza married Henry Smith 1837.
In 1841 they are in Shopland Essex with son Henry age 2 and William 6 months.

Mahala married William Wesney (freebmd) 1837
In 1841 they are in Rochford Essex named spelled Westney with Henry Smith age 2 their nephew who was counted twice.

Possible reason for moving and references.
Essex Lent Assizes 1824 Jonathan Simson  -larcency--NOT guilty. (On ancestry)

There is no indication of age, where he was living regarding this entry, it just seemed coincidental.

Findmypast
2 December 1834 Essex Herald, Chelmsford, Samuel Raiyle found not guilty of stealing 2 shovels and a mattock from Jonathan Simson of Rochford.

28 November 1834 Essex Standard Colchester, William Hill acquitted of stealing 2 shovels and a mattock from Jonathan Simson of Rochford.

Just notes your Jonathan Simson was an Ag. Lab so the tools mentioned are some that he would need.

Thanks very much for your help, Amondg.  That is definitely the same family I had found in Foulness but didn't know about the earlier marriage and births in Little Stambridge. A new door has opened!

So now my question is - would they name a second son JOHN, if they already had a living son named JONATHAN?  Or does that suggest that the first child JONATHAN had already died?
