Holstein birth 1841 - Danish or German records?
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 04:24 BST (UK) »
My gr.grandfather Heinrich Hamann emigrated to Victoria in early 1870's and moved to Queensland  around 1880.  He Anglicised his name to Henry Hammond.  His obituary indicated that he was a seaman and no record of his arrival is evident.  His naturalization papers in 1905 state his place of birth was Holstein.  Born about 1841, his parents were Claus Hamann and Louisa Rusch.  His father's occupation was Naval Captain.  It is possible the town of his birth was Heide.

At the time of his birth Holstein was under Danish rule and later Prussia by 1867.  Could anyone suggest where the record of his birth may be held?  Would any Parish records be available for that time in Holstein, I am assuming Lutheran may be the religion.?

Regards,
Jen.

Hi Jen,

Try the Danish censuses first of all. Many have been transcribed and recorded in a database here (www.akvz.de)

Hamann appears to have been a very common name.

Holstein was then under Danish rule for at least the next 20 years, before Prussia pinched it! Whether records survive, and whether if they do the Prussians pinched them too is unknown to me.

Jen,

The parish record of Schleswig and Holstein are held by the church archives.

http://www.archivnordkirche.de/ If you right-click with your mouse, you can translate the page into English.

More excitingly, I have recently discovered that images of many German parish records - including those of Schleswig-Holstein - have been made available here https://www.archion.de/de/archive-in-archion/hamburg/landeskirchliches-archiv-der-ev-luth-kirche-in-norddeutschland-kiel/ You can select English in the top right-hand corner.

Hello Jen,

I appreciate your thanks (and the PM).

A search in the Danish censuses throws up a lot of candidates. I really hope that you find your man and his family.

Happy hunting, Justin

Hello Justin,   You mention that were able to search the Danish censuses, I am having difficulty
searching these records as I am unable to translate the pages to English.  I used
the icon on the top right of the page and the message reads "this page has been
translated" but the page still remains in Danish.  Any suggestions would be
                   appreciated.

Jen.

Hello Jen,

You are on the German website www.akvz.de aren't you?

It's probably wrong to call them the Danish censuses. They are the censuses of the former Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein which were under Danish rule at the time. The original census forms were entirely in German.

Towards the bottom left-hand corner of the first page there is a drop down box to select the language.

Having set 'English', when you select 'Datenbank' from the list further up, the search form in English eventually comes up (after the countdown). Look at the attached screen view.

All the search results should appear in English now.
