Embarked Location - Convict
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 07:46 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what this might say. Originally tried in Sydney and sent to Norfolk Island, not sure that the embarked location says.

Cheers

It looks like Protestant. (though the middle "t" looks more like an "f". Seeing more of the writing to compare letter formation may help)
Is that a place or a denomination, or the name of a vessel?

If you can find a similar record for another convict it might help to see what is usually written under "Embarked."

Would it be the name of the ship?

When I first looked, thought it might be - or supposed to be - Pontefract.  Did we have a convict ship of that name?   But it does also look like Protestant - maybe the Embarked belongs to what is written above it  ???

The word above looks like Sydney, so maybe "embarked" does belong to the line above (though there appears to be a printed word as well). An image of a larger area might clarify. :)

Hi everyone,

Here is a fuller view of the unknown word. It is from a Convict Conduct Record, the "embarked" normally does relate to the port of embarkation. But i guess it is possible that they wrote the ship.

Yes above does say Sydney, he was tried at the Sydney Quarter Sessions, sent to Norfolk Island and the subsequently to Tasmania.

If he was tried Sydney, surely he would also depart from Sydney? Does that record say tried 1842, embarked 1846? Would he not be in prision in the intervening years?

I have very little experience with convict records, but on those I have seen, I have noticed a lot of repeated information. Are there any other records which may support the information about port of embarkation on this conduct record?

By the way, was he a protestant?  ;) :)

This Conduct Record is from when he arrived in Tasmania in 1846 from Norfolk Island. He was tried in Sydney in 1842 and sent to Norfolk Island, hence the difference in date.

It would make sense that the "Embarked" is from a port on Norfolk Island, but I couldn't find anything on what that might be.

It is just saying his religion - "Protestant"

Here's another for comparison which has "R. C. read a little", neither related to embarked, they've just entered it where there was space.
