I find this absolutely incredible.  I have never in my life had any software that the company just turned off so it would not connect to the internet.  I have FTM 2012 and was away from the hobby for a while.  For the past couple of days, I have been trying to connect.  So I finally got a copy of 2014 after reading that it has some problems but if you install it you can download a free update to the newest version.  Well, I have just spent hours trying to figure out why it is telling me that I am not on the internet while indeed I am.  I found this forum by googling the question.  What a rip off!  Incredible.  I will search for software from a better company now

Hi, every time I have a new version of FTM it has always picked up all the information held on earlier versions without my having to do anything.

Family Tree Maker is now owned by https://www.mackiev.com/ftm/ check their website and contact them to see what they say,I think the "Free" upgrades have expired but not sure if the discounted upgrade from FTM 14 to 17 is still available

I had completed as much of my research as I needed so have been away for some time. In the meantime FTM 2014 seems to have been discarded by the new owners.  This is news to me but not a surprise. I read that Ancestry had 'sold' out another company and  being a cynic I concluded that nothing good would come of it. My experience was that Ancestry - or its staff - took a keen interest in the program.

Up to now I've not been affected but having received a clue which could take my research into another branch of the family its very disappointing to find that we are being 'forced' to succumb to the new company's profiteering. Yep, they need to make money but at 80 I'm not in a position to afford such nonsense. The result of this is that despite being a keen genealogist I will not be using FTM except as reference and definitely not buying into the FTM 2017 (which is obviously out of date already as it is now 2019) ;-)

PS; anyone know of a decent tree maker?

Hi EnFrance and welcome back to genealogy,

Firstly, please confirm that
* you have a complete  backup, of your FTM14 data on your computer?
* does that include any media files?
* you can access your tree(s) on that computer?

Assuming that the answers above are "yes", "?", "yes"
then do not worry you probably do not need a linked&online Ancestry to function,
you just need to use FTM14 as a tree data record.

Make your changes on the offline version of FTM14.
Export the data to a gedcom file ( this will not contain media )
You can then upload to something else ( say Zoompast.com ) to display online.

Or use FTM14 as is ( offline )

Ensure that you take at least one backup of you files, before you start.

I was disgruntled about the changes, but do like the synching facility.  For ages I just used my old version offline, but when PC crashed I could get the old version to instal.

So I ended up buying FTM once more but I hung on and ended getting it at a reduced priced - I think it was almost 50% off, so keep an eye out.
