Martha Pitt
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 10:47 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate any information on Martha Pitt. She married George Ridgeon around 1773/74. Their first son John was born c1774, followed by Susan baptised 1778 in Thingoe, George baptised 1780 in Hawstead, James bap, 1782, Marth 1786, Thomas 1788, Robert 1791, Benjamin 1794 & William 1797 - all Hawstead. Martha died & was buried in Hawstead on 26 Aug 1818.

I have unsuccessfully tried to locate details of Martha's birth, baptism & Marriage. I am assuming she was born between 1750-1755. I have found baptisms for a Martha Pett in 1756 in Ixworth & another Martha Pett in 1645 in Freston but no baptisms for a Martha Pitt. Her age on death was given as 63yrs which would make her bon in 1755 (FHL Film Number 951464). The surname Pitt is given on the baptisms for her children.

I would appreciate any information on Martha, particularly where she was born, who her parents were or any sibling information.

Thank you

Thank you so much for this very quick response. I don't suppose this showed her fathers name did it? This is really helpful & something for me to look into
Thanks again
Carole

It's only an index I'm afraid and a marriage at this time is unlikely to show father's name, unless one or other was a minor. The witnesses names might be useful, but you would need to consult the parish register.

All the children's baptisms you mention above took place at Hawstead (Thingoe was a registration district)

John born 27 Oct privately baptised 28 Oct 1775 publicly baptised 9th March George = a husbandman
Susan born 3rd Jan baptised 15th Feb 1778
George born 3rd May privately baptised 7th May publicly baptised 16th May 1780
James born 19th Dec 1782 baptised 29th Dec 1782
Martha born 18th Dec 1785 baptised 1st Jan 1786
Thomas born 4th November 1788 baptised 22nd 1788 (is how it read) George = a pauper
Robert born 8th August baptised 4th Sept 1791 George = a labourer
Benjamin born 23rd Sept 1794 baptised 12 Oct 1794 George = a labourer
William born 6 Aug baptised 11 Oct 1797

I couldn't see baptisms of George or Martha at Hawstead
