Scottish SMITH family travellers - THOMAS and ROSE around 1900
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 17:17 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am looking for any information relating to my ancestor, William Brown's 2nd wife (irregular marriage) to Elizabeth Rose Smith - marriage date 06.10.1939. Her DOB is 03.09.1892 born in Denny, Stirling.

I'd like to know more about Elizabeth's family of 'travellers'; her father, Thomas Smith (deceased by 1939) and mother Rose Wightman/Weightman who married 02.10.1890 in Hamilton.

I know they knew the Codona family but nothing else except William Brown and Elizabeth's marriage cert shows them as 'Amusement Caterers' - not sure of the Caterers word but it looks like that.

Also trying to trace William Brown's first marriage without success though his marriage to 'Lizzy' shows him as divorced. I  believe he had a child to hat first wife who was named Jean Brown but know nothing more of her or her mother.

Any help or signposting greatly appreciated.

The  Codona family
The Codona family came from Italy to Scotland in the early 19th century. They were a circus family and toured the country as entertainers. One branch of the family left Glasgow in the early 1900’s and went to America ,then moved to Mexico and formed a trapeze act which eventually became the world famous “Flying Codonas”. With the advent of the Cinematograph the family in Scotland opened a “Travelling Picture Show” and eventually opened cinema halls in the East of Scotland. It was during this time the “Steam Driven” fairground rides started to appear and the family owned and toured with various popular rides.* courtesy of Scotlands Fairgrounds*
