Hi David as I said I know all about him, but thanks all the same. I have 2 photos of him in Mesopotamia. One being with his men in 1915 and one with general Maude entering Baghdad. As you will see he is only a Captain in 1915 and a colonel in 1917. I know sergeant J ades died of the fever a few months after this photo. Captain John also had it. I have seen the letters Sergeant Ades sent to his dad and it brought a tear to my eyes. My dad was also out there in 1915 with the 1/5th buff. Gerald Alfred Body. No one knew why about 50 were there, as the 20,000 appx Indian and British troops were surround in Amara El Kut and suffered badly. There is some postings on this on rootschat. If you have any photos would love to see them please? ivor

I think that's Col Body seated. My grandfather, Edward Boulding, is in the same row, seated, extreme right. I think this might have been taken in Kemptee, India.

I have many, many more photos but haven't had time to scan them... One day I promise.

Read a great book by Maj. Paul Knight, the British Army in Mespotamia and the 1/5 Buffs are mentioned as trying to relieve Kut. My grandfather was shot during the battle but happily survived. It was far, far worse in Mespotamia than France.

David Thanks that is brilliant never seen this one. Can I use it to try and find out who is who? If not can I send it to a  great niece of Jack ( John) Body please? That is a brilliant photo. Yes sitting 5th from the left. Thanks again any more would be appreciated. Still don't know why my dad went out in 1915 before the main army 1916? I am so annoyed I knew nothing about his time there before he died 1989 or being shot by the IRA on sentry duty at the London and North Western Railway hotel North Wall Dublin april 1921. Like thousands of other troops he was not wanted after the first world war so joined RIC as a cadet.

Hello Ivor

My grandfather went to India first, to Kamptee in (I think October) 1914 - also Pachmarhi which is  the  Indian  School  of  Musketry,  and  is  a  five  hundred  miles  journey  from  Kamptee,  but  as  the  crow  flies  it  is  only about  one  hundred  and  eighty seven miles, and is far up in the hills. The left the UK in October on the HMT Corsica.

There is the diary of a Private Burchett of the 1/5th Buffs describing the journey to India which is well worth a read. Poor fellow died there in June 1915 of gastroenteritis.

Please use my photo. I can probably identify some of the people given enough time.. It's always the same faces.

My grandfather is the one saluting. Is that Col Body in front?

I may have even been there that day. As a child (1960-ish?) I remember going to Canterbury for the laying of the colours and seeing all the old boys marching past.

David unfortunately Jack Body died in 1945 so not on that photo, but still appreciated it. Have you seen this?  https://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/whats-on/news/2017/04/24/the-buffs-return-to-chapel/

This probably overlaps other postings on Mesopotamia, but did not know where to show it?   My father was Gerald Alfred Body

The 1/5th Buffs arrived in Mesopotamia on 1st December 1915, disembarking in Basra. However, according to the Medal Rolls, several men from the Battalion entered the theatre somewhat earlier, on 14th August 1915. I've tracked down the service records of a couple of these men, but there is unfortunately no further explanation, other than the fact that they joined "Expeditionary Force D".

A report in the local newspaper in January 1917, says that Simmons was actually among those besieged inside Kut, was taken prisoner by the Turks and died as a result of the hardships. So he was apparently on the inside while his mates were trying to get in. His official date of death was 28th September 1916.

Thanks Ivor

I don't really know the date my grandfather arrived in Basrah but between 5/12/15 and 9/12/15. All I know is that he was shot in the battle for Sheikh Sa'ad, the relief of Kut on Jan 7 1916.

I have some notes about his war service

It says Mesopotamia. Entry into theatre 5/12/15 (then a red star by this saying 9/12/15)

"Language Qualifications:
Hindustani Working Knowledge
Arabic Working Knowledge"

"Leave taken prior to joining Mes Ex Force, specifying nature of leave, duration and dates:

"All leave taken from Mesopotamia specifying nature of leave, duration, dates and where spent:
nil"

"Honours, Rewards, Mentions in Despatches
nil"
