Opening docx files
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 22:12 BST (UK) »
Is there a simple way to open a docx file? When i try to open one all i get is a page of hieroglyphics.

I presume that if i can convert the files to another type i can read them?

I've looked online and there are so many sites offering conversion downloads and i don't know a safe one from a bad one.

The key word here is "simple" i am not technically great and that is an understatement!! poli  :-\

Hi

Is the file from someone who you know?

Get them to send it as a PDF?

Alternatively, pm me for my email address and send it to me?
[ I'll convert it, if I can ]

If you are using Windows 8 or later it will give you the option to open with Google docs, which will make the file readable.

Alternatively, ask the sender to save and send the file as an earlier version of  Word, e.g. Word 2003, which sued .doc files which I suspect you can open.

Thank you both for replying.

A couple of months ago my laptop broke down. I found someone local who got the p.c working again
but lost many photos and files.

I recently found in 'My documents' a file that said 'Recovered files' so was hoping  it contained some of those i had lost, however when i opened it there was just a list of about 12 Docx files.

Unfortunately they don't make sense when opened which is why i was hoping to convert them into
something readable.  poli

p.s i have Windows 7

something readable.  poli

If you have Open Office, you can open docx files then Save As..... A PDF or a Microsoft Office document - Word file, as Keitht says!   Then you'll be able to read them.

You need to have Open Office installed on your PC to open a docx that " speaks Engiish" but there are plenty of free downloads online for it.

As you have a few of these files,
the implication is that you already have Microsoft Ofiice v2007 or newer on your machine.

The link to open them correctly may have "disappeared".
So, try right-click the file and "openwith" . . . . . Microsoft Word.

You can also get free third-party docx viewer reader programs, but be careful that you only use a reputable source.
