Did you have Microsoft Office ( ie Word ) on your machine before your problems ?
What did you use to create a document before your problems ?

Should you need it, this is the link for downloading the FREE LibreOffice for Windows . . . . .

.. but before that you might as well try and finish off what you've already started

Try searching for wdviewer.exe in Windows Explorer to see if you can find your missing download

Someone has kindly tried to 'open' one of the docx files for me and found it was corrupted. Knowing that, i am fairly sure that the rest of the docx files are quite probably similarly affected.

Am now taking more measures to back up more of what i have that is important to me.
I already have info on an external hardrive  and will keep adding to it.

Thanks to all once again for trying to help. poli :)

http://www.zamzar.com/

Is an online site that has been recommended previously for file conversions. It asks for an email address, but their terms of service claim "Zamzar does not rent, sell, or share your personal information or email address with any other companies." and I don't recall any particular increase after using the service.

If the files are corrupt you could have a go at looking inside them to try and salvage material.  Make a copy of the file and change the extension from .docx to .zip, and then double click to open.  The file will open like a folder with folders inside.  Open the "word" folder and then the file document.xml. It will probably open in your internet browser. It's full of code gobbly gook, but you may be able to make out sections and be able to copy them to a new document.
