I cannot find this mans WW1 records.  Sadly one of those destroyed it seems.   Can anyone tell me anything about what this man is wearing, he seems particularly untidy for a soldier?

If it's any help he'd have been 36 in 1915.  No idea when this picture was taken.

Definately ww1 uniform, economy version so after ?? 1915. Can't remember the date they started that to save money.

No rank, no overseas stripes, no wound stripes and no trade badges. Only half a cap badge and that is indistinct. Do you have a name, that will help sort him out. Otherwise he will remain, untidy yes, identified no.

Sorry but this is the only picture I have and I'm not technical enough to fiddle with it.   He was Joseph Knapp born Rotherfield Sussex, lived in Mayfield most of his life.  Born January 1879 to parents James and Elizabeth Knapp.

He was married to Ethel and had 6 children, the family fell on hard times and Mayfield British Legion organised the funeral following his death in Uckfield Nursing Home. Newspaper report described him as local ex-serviceman.  I know it's a long shot but any snippet of info would be welcome.

Can see only 1 MIC for a Joseph Knapp.
Dvr. T4/108429 R.A.S.C.
Discharged 20/3/1919. No longer physically fit for war service.
No Service/Pension records have survived so no way of knowing if this is your man.
There are several J Knapps but no other info.
If you can find the original picture we might have a chance.

jim1 - thank you so much for looking.  I have only had a copy of this picture for a couple of days, sent by to me by a fellow researcher.   I'll make enquiries to see if we can contact the original owner of the photograph.
