Mary Barrow - did she follow Ada?
« on: Monday 24 July 17 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi.

I have Mary born c. 1874 in Bickershaw (in 1881 census).

1891 census has her 17, living at 8 Nelson Street, Failsworth with mother Ellen and siblings. Mary is listed as born in Wigan and working as a Cardroom Operative in a Cotton Mill.

By 1901, the family are fragmented.

No appearance in subsequent census. Cannot see a suitable death nor marriage.

There is a public tree that has one sibling, Ada (born c 1882) travelling to the US in 1900 and living in Connecticut (marrying Richard B Moore).

If you just go to Familysearch.Org and put in;
Mary Barrow, born c 1873-1876 England and search , any United States, this comes up;

1930 US Census
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mary BARROW, Head, F, 56, Unmarried, Occ Nurse, born 1874 England, Immigrated 1898***
Alice Sanderson   Lodger   F   50   New Jersey
Mary Thompson   Lodger   F   40   Pennsylvania
Betty Sutters   Lodger   F   50   Pennsylvania
Alice Neil   Lodger   F   50   Pennsylvania

Image of Ship Passenger List has her joining her Brother but his name is hard to make out.
(On Familysearch.also, she under M Barrow)

Possible?

EdI; A tree has her Brother Cornelius going to the States also after 1891.

They were looking for a better life usually.
More opportunities in another Land.

Look at all the Irish/Scottish/English that came to Australia and New Zealand in the 1850's- 1890's

I traveled the World by myself. :)

Yes. I'm a bit ignorant, thinking that a single woman (i.e. no family) shouldn't be able to be independent (in those times) albeit travelling to the unknown.

Yes. Cornelius died in Connecticut 1934. He married in Leigh 1886 and moved his family out there.

Ties in perfectly.
