I'm interested in the Landells in Jamaica, if anyone has clues on the family of George James Landells, who was involved with the (Australian) Burke and Wills Expedition in 1861 - arranging the supply of camels.
GJ Landells was born 5 Feb 1825 in Barbados, parents George Landells and Margaret Anderson.
GJ Landells spent a lot of time in India and died in Rawal Pindi. I know of several siblings - Margaret Isabella Morris LANDELLS who married Frederick Patrick KEATING in 1853 in Victoria, Australia. I have names for others, but no birth or death dates though a brother, Bernard Hosea LANDELLS was also born in Jamaica.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Westernwombat

Just to clarify? You're not looking for further information on GJ himself? But if you are, then let us know what you're looking for.

Are you looking for more information on his parents, whose names you have? If so, what sort of thing are you looking for, what do you already know?

You say you know of several siblings' names......aside from the two you mention what are the names of the others?

Cheers

Hi AMBLY - apart from information from Australian newspaper reports a couple of years prior to the B&W Expedition, through to a few years later, I have a little information about GJ Landells and the one sister, as given in my initial post.
George James Landells b. 5 Feb 1825 in Barbados, Jamaica  d. 4 Dec 1871 in Rawal Pindi, India
his wife: Elizabeth Rosa (no last name, date / place of birth, date / place of marriage, date / place of death; no details of her parents, siblings).
GJ served in the British army, in India ? I know little of his life or careers except the short period associated with the B&W Expedition. I will leave that aside as it is well documented elsewhere.

No information about offspring if any of GJ and Rosa

His parents: names only (George Landells, Margaret Anderson), and that his father served in the army - assumed to be various British regiments in India and Jamaica, perhaps elsewhere.

The siblings of GJ Landells:

GJ - the first-born, 1825
Margaret Isabella Morris Landells b. 1836 d. 1884, Yarram Yarram, Victoria Australia
 - married Frederick Patrick Keating (1828-1906, also died in Yarram Yarram, Victoria) in 1853, in Victoria Australia. They were living in Sandhurst (Bendigo), Victoria at the time that the B&W Expedition passed through, and until after the enquiry afterwards.

James Whaley Landells - no information
Bernard Hosea Landells - born in Jamaica
Mary Forbes Olivia Landells - no information, except that she married a man surname MARRACK
Adelaide Maria Landells - married a man surname WHITE

That's about the sum of it.

My direct relationship to LANDELLS is to Reverend William Burns LANDELLS b. 1812 in Alnwick, Northumberland who died in 1871 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

A family story was that he had hoped to meet GJ Landells when in Melbourne, Australia (Rev WB had migrated to Australia in 1852 and was living in Geelong). Supposedly, a brother or half-brother had run away from home as a youth in Northumberland, and his whereabouts and fate was unknown. There was a conjecture that GJ Landells may be the missing brother - and that Rev WB Landells wanted to meet GJ Landells to explore that possibility (all of this is heresay).

Hmmmm, more mystery

Apparently, a son named as G. E. MARRACK   ??? of 330 Baker*, was looking for information on his father: Richard Thornton MARRACK,  whom he believed came to the US about 1880 and lived in US until 1901 in SF and asked for assistance from the Vital Records Office to find him:
The resulting report 14 March 1941, states Richard  was searched for in Voter Registers:
1880, 1882, 1886, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1896, 1898, and 1900 but no record was found**. And that furthermore the only MARRACK in San Francisco were B W Noel MARRACK, and Augustus Edmond MARRACK, a native of Nevada.
** Note: The 1900 Census states Richard is an Alien, so not eligible to vote?)
* Note: Son Noel (B W N MARRACK) was living at 540 Baker in 1910)

Just read Richard's  own page on Finda Grave - it seems like he took his own life in 1901:
https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=169155113
2 Bodies found in the water  at Land's End  (SF, California) 1901.
One was identified by Reginald Marrack,  "as that of his father, Rev. Richard T. Marrack, formerly a Methodist minister, but for a number of years past employed as a bookeeper by the Methodist Book Concern. He had suffered from melancholia for several weeks owing to ill health and also because his position was about to be taken from him on account of his advanced age….He had evidently wandered out to the beach, and, after removing his outer clothing, had sought death in the ocean…..Dr. Marrack was 70 years of age and a native of England He came to California from Australia in 1873. He leaves a wife and nine children, one of whom is Cecil Marrack, formerly an intercollegiate debater at Stanford University"  :'(

Apparently Mary was in poor health, and fears for her well being meant the family kept the news of her husband's death from her 'for the time being'.

Another death notice, said he  - Richard - was a Native of Cornwall.

Was looking for clues to parentage of Mary - from the above: her father

Captain, George LANDELLS, 22nd Regiment

What a can of worms! It will take me a while to understand - and I should be able to find more at the Australian end for Mary, it seems.
