Sheffield

I lived in Sheffield for most of my life but this address I dont know - Workhouse Croft? The people I'm looking at weren't actually in the workhouse. The date is 1851 census. Where is it? I'm sure someone out there will know. I don't expect it will still exist, even under another name.

Workhouse Croft is mentioned on the Sheffield page on the Workhouses website - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Sheffield/ - in the first paragraph ("Up to 1834").

It's said to be "at West Bar, on what is now Paradise Street", though from reading further it appears that the workhouse itself had moved to another site by 1851.

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

No problem - at least we agree  :)

Workhouse Croft is marked on this map: http://maps.nls.uk/view/102345217 You'll have to zoom in to find it - it runs northwards from the NW corner of the parish church/cathedral yard. As has been pointed out, newer maps show it as Paradise Street.

Thank you so much Arthurk and Frank. That's brilliant. I have  walked up that street many times way back in the dim and distant. I was an office junior for a solicitors office in town and had to take our post out and deliver it by hand to all the offices within what they considered to be walking distance. Woe betide me if I was late back for my role as tea maker though. Funny to remember that. I just wish that I had know that the road would have significance. There was an artist who lived there who I think will prove to be an ancestor.
Thanks again,

Pat
