Army Service Records for Ireland 1950's
« on: Monday 24 July 17 20:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out if I can find the service records for one of my Ancestors, namely Michael Whelehan who served at Collins Barracks in Dublin in the 1950's.
He married an Elizabeth Daniels on 6th August 1951 in Dublin, he is listed as being a member of the defence forces, his father is listed as Thomas Whelehan.

Any help appreciated.

Someone with more experience of Irish military records might be able to provide a link for requesting records but unless they are your own records it's possible that it will have to be the next of kin (spouse if alive, then child, etc.) that can apply and that they will have to supply a copy of his death certificate with an application.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

It's on the FAQ page.

You'll need birth certs.

From the page Sinann posted link to-

Personnel records of soldiers that are deceased are currently available to direct next of kin only. In exceptional circumstances, direct next of kin may give permission to a third party researcher to proceed with an enquiry on their behalf.
Military Archives requires a signed letter of application for personnel records along with copies of the birth certificate(s) of the applicant to establish their relationship to personnel of interest.
For example:
the son or daughter would need to send a copy (either scanned and attached on an email, or a photocopy posted to us) of the long version of their birth certificate, while a grandson or granddaughter would need, in addition, a signed note of permission to view the file from the next of kin.
If the direct next of kin has died, then the grandson or granddaughter would need to send on copies of both their own birth certificate and the birth certificate of their father or mother, to show their relationship to the soldier over the two generations.
The OIC Military Archives may request a death certificate for the subject and/or a sworn affidavit stating the next of kin relationship.

Thanks Aghadowey.

I think I'll need to do some more digging maybe on family descendants of Michael Whelehan and Elizabeth Daniels first to see if there are any living descendants on this family line.

You said in your first post that Michael Whelehan was an ancestor  ??? So, is he an ancestor (and there are so many descendants that you don't know who would be next of kin) or is he just related to you in some way (in which case are your sure he is deceased)?
