Thanks for all of that. You've really helped.

I'm just reading the 18/Batt. war diary to see if there's a mention of men being transferred to the 3/10 Batt.
Won't be quick.

That's very good of you. Is there a chance my great-grandfather might come up?

I have discovered that he was a private, according to the National Archives. About as much as I can get for free.

Other Ranks are very seldom mentioned in war diaries.
So he didn't come up but he may have thrown up.
I'll explain.
There's an amusing snippet in Oct. 1916 while the 18th. were on the Somme.
They were on the move & mustered outside a bar waiting for buses, 23 NCO's & men got drunk & couldn't get on the bus. This threw the schedule into chaos & when they got off the other end they couldn't march in a straight line.
Amongst all of the carnage he witnessed I'd like to think he was one of them.
No information about movement of men 1916-17 to other Batts.

That is an amusing story! I hope that he was among them too. From what I understand, he was very reticent when it came to talking about the war, so like many other young men at war he would seen some terrible things. There is a medal card in the loft, so I may get that down soon. I might pay £3.50 to the National Archives for their medal record too.

The medal card won't tell you anything you don't already know. You already have the info. from them.
Found 1 movement of men from the 18th. to the 4th. MDDX. on 3/10/16. There's nothing for men going to the 3/10 MDDX. which was his 2nd. Batt.

I don't suppose the mystery will ever be fully solved, what with his and many other records being burnt. I've learnt a lot today anyway.

Can't say when he transferred to the 3/10 but they were broken up Feb. 1 1918. Feb. 12 1918 the 4th. had a draft of 227 OR's (no Batt. mentioned).
My guess is that he was one of the transfers to the 4th. from the 3/10th. on that date.
