BUTLER of Little Bedwyn, Chisbury
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hello - I am searching for any information about the BUTLER family, who lived in Chisbury little Bedwyn around 1932, they were farmers I think. 1932 was the year my grandfather was born and immediately adopted, with his birth having been registered in Hungerford, Ramsbury district. There was never any contact with my grandfather's mother and his father was on the birth certificate as unknown.

Is there any way of finding any further details about why he was adopted from any other types of records that may have been kept, I.e parish records etc? I think I am at a dead end sadly but just wanted to check.

thanks! :)

You say you would like information about the Butler family - could you say who your grandfather's Mother was?

Presumably he was adopted because he was illegitimate and there are a whole variety of reasons why.

Have you got his adoption records?

Hello, it was Celia Mary Butler - the address on my grandfather's birth certificate is 128 Potters Farm, Chisbury, but having searched and searched there is no record of that address that I can see? No 'Potters Farm' anyway, so presumably it was a farm of Mr Potter perhaps? My grandfather was Gordon Eric Owen, adopted in 1932 I assume (year of his birth). He died in 1986.

thanks!

This is the only Celia M Butler birth that I can see in a suitable time period:

Celia Mary Butler mmn FREEGARD
1911  June quarter Quarter in Bradford On Avon  Volume 05A  Page 107

and this might be the parents:
Marriages December quarter 1885
 Henry Butler    Chippenham    5a   120
Ellen Freegard    Chippenham    5a   120

Henry appears to be living in Pewsey, Wiltshire in 1939 with his daughter Caroline.

If you look for Edward Potter born 1793 in the 1871 census he is living in Little Bedwyn, Chisbury, on a farm of 440 acres.  He is on the first listed page of the census, on the preceding page is a description of the enumeration district, for geographical information.
