Ann Wilson (d.after 1842) - mystery woman?
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am looking for the baptism and burial of Ann, my ancestor. Ann Wilson m. Michael Watson on 19 Aug 1832 in Bishop-Wearmouth, Durham, by Banns. Witnesses were Hannah Wilson and William Craggs. I know Michael was born in 1804 in Satley and was the son of William Watson, a labourer. The couple lived in Grindon (Michael an ag lab) in 1841 and Ann's age was 35. I find Michael in 1851 in Houghton le Spring, a widower, with just Catherine, Mary Ann, and John (younger children minus Thomas).

The couple had these children in Grindon (except the eldest, born in Houghton-le-Spring):
William Watson 1834–1911
Mary Ann Watson 1836–
Thomas Watson 1839–
Catherine Watson 1840–
John Watson 1842–

Wilson is such a popular surname that I'm really struggling to determine Ann's parentage. I tried looking for parents with both an Ann and a Hannah baptised but the online records seem scarce and I don't know for sure that Hannah was Ann's sister. I found Michael buried in 1872 in Shildon, but Ann died before that. I can't find her in the census beyond 1841.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi

A couple of possible baptisms in the area as the 1841 was usually  rounded down to 5 year age bands

Monkwearmouth, St Peter
1 Dec 1805 (brn 18 July) 1st daughter of Jacob Wilson (Monkwearmouth, boatbuilder)
and his wife Mary Jackson (daughter of Thomas Jackson of Sunderland)

Sunderland, Holy Trinity
2 May 1802 (born 30 January) 1st daughter of John Wilson (keelman, native of Bishopwearmouth)
and Sarah Norman (his wife, native of Bishopwearmouth)

Re the witness ~
There is a baptism for a Hannah Wilson (father John) in Sunderland in 1799 but mother is Hannah, formerly Watson   :-\

...so wouldn't fit as Ann is John's first daughter

There is a death record of an Ann Watson in 1846 age 41:-

GRO Reference: 1846 J Quarter in HOUGHTON LE SPRING UNION Volume 24 Page 128

A possible Ann Wilson:
Baptism date: 19 May 1805 at Houghton Le Spring
Father: William Wilson
Mother: Mary Hodgson

Also of same parents:
William 1801 in Stanhope
John 1807 in Houghton
Thomas 1809 in Houghton
Catherine 1812 in Houghton

No mother's surname but:
Hannah Wilson 26 Aug 1799 in Stanhope, daughter of William and Mary

William and Mary married in Stanhope on 02 Jul 1798

Not convinced by the Stanhope family as Stanhope is a fair way way from the Sunderland area.

I'm assuming that the Grindon, where the couple lived,  is the one on the outskirts of Sunderland.

May not be the right family anyway but people move and, in 1851, five people in Houghton were born in Stanhope between 1788 and 1813.

Main problem is the age rounding on the 1841 - all the 15 and overs on the same pages as Michael and Ann are rounded to 5s or 0s, so Ann could be born anytime between 1801 and 1806  :-\

Thank you very much Gadget! I don't think Jacob and Mary are Ann's parents because there are no Jacobs in the family until later on, and I know at that point they come from the other side. I am unsure of John and Sarah - Sarah also does not appear in the family.

I think the family you've picked out looks like a strong possibility given that Ann's firstborn was baptised in Houghton le Spring. I am also wondering who William Craggs is - maybe a husband of one of Ann's siblings? I'll try to trace this Hannah Wilson b 1799 as well.

The names of the Wilson children correspond nicely with Ann Wilson Watson's children's names as well..especially Catherine, which I know didn't come down from the other side.
