Gadget, you are right - I was looking at an outdated version of my tree (William lists his birthplace as Houghton le Spring in a few census records). Thank you!

These Wilsons are difficult - I've got a significant line of Wilsons. I've traced 8 Jones lines in Wales with more success  :-\

Do you have details of Michael's family, apart from his father?  As he came from Satley, the Stanhope family are possible but it's worth trying for others as well.

I know Michael's mother was Ann Hall from East Butsfield, Lanchester and his father was William Watson from Esh. The couple married in Lanchester in 1783. All of their children were baptised first in Lanchester and the later ones at Drover House farm, where William Sr was an ag lab, in Satley. William Sr died in Tanfield in 1817.

I commiserate re: Jones in Wales - my last name is Ellis and my paternal family is also from Wales, so you can imagine the brickwalls there!

The reason I ask about siblings is that I've been looking for the family and come across this one:

A Michael Watson  living with his widowed mother, Elizabeth,81,b. Tanfield,  in H le S in 1861 but down as unmarried -this  might have been corrected to Wr, b. Murton . Also there are his brother George, 42 and sister Margaret A Hall, 45, both born Offerton.

In 1871, he's just with brother George, now down as unmarried and b. Dalton

He's in Houghton le Spring on both these censuses but neither fit with the birthplace that you have.

Not sure if this is the correct Michael but don't see another one - have I missed a bad transcription ?

Have you got him in the censuses after 1851?

Apologies for previous find!

Now found Michael on the 1861, in Ryhope with Catherine and John - not sure what the other site was up to with their indexing -yet to investigate!

Hi Gadget

I have him in 1861 living in Ryhope, Durham with his children Catherine and John, still an ag lab. He gives his birth date as 1815 in Berryedge - no idea why he subtracted 11 years!

I haven't located him in 1871 but I know he has to be somewhere because he was buried in 1872. I am not sure who this Michael is that you've located...

Here are his siblings:

Elizabeth Watson 1784–
Thomas Watson 1788–
Ann Watson 1790–
Ann Watson 1790–
Sarah Watson 1791–
Mary Watson 1794–
Jane Watson 1798–1810
Dorothy Watson 1802–1863 (m. George Summerson and then Archibald Scott)
