Hi all,
I found someone listed in the National Union of Railwaymen general register of members in 1913. Under "Branch admitting" it says Liverpool no. 8. Does anyone know which station this is? As he lived close to Edge Hill Station I am leaning towards this one, but would like to confirm.

Do any records exist of specifically Edge Hill Station workers?

Thanks!

RMT HQ Euston Road London should know the catchment area of Liverpool No 8 branch.Wherever it is, it may be based on an occupational group, eg shunters or passenger guards etc, who will have a common occupation or line of promotion, it may also cover all the staff at a specific depot.

This map, which I am sure you have already seen, shows the huge complex of railway operations around edgehill,  most of this complex does not form part of edgehill station, the marshalling yards, sorting sidings, locomotive depot etc will mostly have their own branches of the NUR.

To give you some idea, tha locomotive depot alone had several hundred employed there, although loco drivers and firemen mostly belonged to a different union (ASLEF) that still leaves a lot of NUR men.

The marshalling yards sorting sidings etc handling huge amounts of traffic from Liverpool docks could well have employed several hundred more men, realistically your man could have worked anywhere within this complex.

Good luck with your search,

Mike

Ancestry seem to have railway records for the LNWR, which was the main railway company responsible for edgehill.
Listed under rail410 at the national archives, but viewable on ancestry.

They may have year of joining, date of birth, what their job title was, promotions and transfers to other depots, but if a man worked at the same place for most of his life, as many railwaymen did, it may not be very  informative.

Mike

What are you hoping to discover.

Edit, ancestry index says rail410 covers the London and North Western Railway Company, the national archives search is less informative, although the national archives has a guide for family historians searching railway records.
