It may be a good idea to get Bertha's death certificate as she apparently died first.

Agreed, but first I'm hoping to arrange a meeting with a 'Aldridge/Harrop' grandson who is out of the country just now.     If that doesn't work then Bertha's death certificate would appear to be the next step.

Henry Victor's birth certificate clearly shows father and mother as 'Aldridge' yet no marriage record has been found.    There could be reasons - privacy etc and I don't suppose this is a unique circumstance.

If the 1939 deaths are the right ones, then their approx. birthdates were 1874 (Robert) and 1884 (Bertha) - they would therefore have been plenty old enough to have previous marriages before Henry came along in 1922, which many mean one or both being unable to marry if there was still a living spouse.

Hi,

I wonder if this is Bertha?

Marriage

Bertha HARROP    Jun Q 1904    Southwark    1d  236
Percy ROSE

St Stephen's Church, Walworth, London
May 8th 1904

Percy ROSE

Father:  William ROSE  Deceased  Gas fitter

Bertha HARROP

Father: John HARROP  Deceased  Electrician?

We are not allowed to transcribe the 1911 census here but the Familysearch free search is here,

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01khp/

In 1920 they seem to divorce,

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8025584

with Robert Henry Thomas  ALDRIDGE being the Co-respondent.

It might be worth getting this document to see if Robert is still married then.

It looks like Robert lived in Horsham in 1911,

I can't see a divorce for Robert and Ada Bessie but I can't be sure of a new marriage or a death for her. Maybe she stayed with Robert or they separated without a divorce and that's why no marriage can be found for Robert and Bertha, I've looked for a Berth ROSE marriage but can't find one to Robert.

The free 1939 index shows an Ivy ROSE b.1907 living at the same address as Henry in 1939 which looks like it would fit with Bertha and Percy's daughter but the year of birth is wrong and she is married. Perhaps a relation?

Regards,
Daisy

Hello Daisy

I'm grateful for your very helpful reply and the huge amount of research this must have taken you - many thanks.   I'm aware of the 1939 register and the inclusion of Ivy Rose so there is a possible connection to Percy Rose.   I understood he was Robert Henry Aldridge so the possible addition of Thomas is a new angle.  As mentioned in my Monday reply, I'm waiting to see an Aldridge relation who is currently out of the country before  I purchase any more certificates.

I've now managed to find some missing pieces.   Sequence appears to be:

Percy Rose and wife Bertha, living in Horsham, Percy running a pub

Robert Henry Aldridge and wife Ada, living in Horsham, Robert running a pub

In 1920, Percy sues Bertha for divorce citing Robert as co-respondent

Robert and Bertha relocate to Southampton.    No marriage record found

Son,  Henry Victor, born 1939.  Birth certificate records mother as Bertha Aldridge, nee Harrop - one possibility - it was for privacy, another, did Bertha, after divorce, revert to her maiden name?

Bertha Aldridge died 13 September 1939 in Southampton of cerebral hemorrhage, age 55   Certificate seen

Robert Henry Aldridge died 24 September 1939 in Southampton of pneumonia and related matters, age 65.  Certificate  seen

1939 Register shows Ivy Rose as married and residing with Henry Victor.   This was Bertha's daughter.   A family childhood memory recalls another man being around and that Ivy Rose married a 'Mr Rose' hence no change to her surname.   I will now draw a line under Ivy.

Thanks again everyone for your help.
