Help needed with Portsea/Portsmouth/Southampton family please!
« on: Thursday 27 July 17 13:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all, haven't been on for a while but have recently started trying to research my girlfriends family.

I'm fairly experienced with researching so have tried all the usual online routes. But I've hit a big brick wall.

I wondered if someone could see if they agree with my findings as someone online has gone down a different family line than I have and I think mine is more likely to be correct. Any thoughts on whether I'm right or wrong would be great thanks.

Plus I cannot find anything about the gentleman I am looking for! I will try and set it all out now:

I have Frederick Albert Lewis born 1924 south stoneham married Kathleen Gertrude Hards born 1922 south  stoneham, married Winchester 1947.  Her parents married in the area and her siblings were also born there.

I cannot find anything on fredericks father! Mothers maiden name on Fredericks birth record is Hewitt, I have a marriage for a Frederick E Lewis to Ellen V Hewitt in Portsmouth in 1919. I think this is correct having found Ellen ( born in Gibraltar) to be living in the area when she died and that her parents were from Portsea originally. There is another marriage fo a Frederick J Lewis to a Ellen S Hewitt that someone else has but mine seems more likely?

I cannot find a birth or death for a Frederick E Lewis that seems correct, obviously having no date of birth or death is making it very difficult! But Ellen was born in 1896, children born around the early 1920s and marriage 1919 I'm working on a DOB from 1880 to 1900.

I've been through the Southampton street directories and there are a couple of fredericks but I can't tie them in with anything. Ellen died in Eastleigh in 1983.

I'm going to order the certain for Frederick a lewis' birth and Frederick e Lewis marriage but I cant see me finding him still!

Any thoughts or help please? Just ideas would be great.

Cheers, Kev

Births Jun 1925  Lewis    Frederick A    Bull    Southampton    2c   60

This is the only one I can find around that time in Southhampton, this would enable you( or gf) to order his birth cert.
You say mothers maiden name is Hewitt and this one says Bull, so the birth cert you have is that direct from the family?.......... just found this Births Mar 1924  Lewis    Frederick A    Hewitt    S Stoneman    2c   190

Hi, thanks for that, I have Fredrick A Lewis' birth registration details. It's his father Frederick E that I'm after although having just had the thought to check the image of his marriage reg not the transcript I'm certain it's not an E! Looks like an R to me!

Marriages Dec 1924   LEWIS    Frederick J    Hewitt    Wandsworth    1d   869

But the 1924 birth for Fred A Lewis is in MARCH ? So this can't belong to the second marriage

Births Mar 1924  Lewis    Frederick A    Hewitt    S Stoneman    2c   190

As Rosie said, have you tried the 1939 Register?

I cannot find anything on fredericks father! Mothers maiden name on Fredericks birth record is Hewitt, I have a marriage for a Frederick E Lewis to Ellen V Hewitt in Portsmouth in 1919.

I'm seeing that marriage as Frederick R Lewis and Ellen V Hewitt. They had another son Robert E b 1923 Q1 Portsmouth 2B 706. You can find them on the 1939 Register but I'm not allowed to give the details.  There's a death for a Frederick R Lewis Southampton 3Q 1968 6B 622, birth year given as 1897 which looks possible.
