Was David the son of James Arthur? If yes his birth date is given as 8 Jan 1908 on James Arthur's army papers on Ancestry.
,
There is a death registration in 1943 for a David Rimmer born about 1908 in the Liverpool South Registration District.

If your David is the one born 8 Jan 1908 putting his name and date of birth into the free search of the 1939 National Identity Register on FindMyPast gives a hit.

Sorry but Look ups for the National Identity Register aren't allowed. If you are in the UK many libraries have access to Find your Past so you could look it up for yourself.

There is definitely a David Rimmer with the birth date of 8 Jan 1908 who shows up if you put that information in for the search. He appears to be in Southport.

I should have said that he was alive in September 1939 when the NI Register was done, he wouldn't have needed a National Identity Card if he was dead?
